5 Reasons to Ditch Etsy for an Online Store
1 | Save Money
It’s no secret that Etsy takes a huge cut of your sales. What exactly are you paying for?
When you sell something on Etsy they first take a 5% transaction fee. This is essentially what you are paying for being on their platform.
Then, you also have to pay the payment processing fee, which is 3-4% + CA$0.25.
Online stores on average take about a 3% transaction fee. You are therefore losing an extra 5% of your sales while being on Etsy; how much does this amount to for you?
2 | You can Brand Your Content
Branding is an essential part of your business. It is what makes you stand out from your competitors.
As a content strategist, I highly recommend creating a brand image that showcases what makes you different. You want to stand out. In order to do so, you should have:
- A brand story
- Brand colors
- A recognizable voice
On Etsy, this is very difficult to achieve; whereas when you have an online store, you can customize your website to fit your brand voice and style.
3 | Enhance Marketing
Marketing is a core element of any business, and even more so when you are an online business. When you have an online store, you can install Facebook Pixels and use google analytics to enhance your marketing strategy.
In addition, as an online store you can create a newsletter sign up pop-up. This allows you to collect emails and retarget potential clients through a newsletter.
4 | Have Total Control
If you are like my clients, you are working extremely hard to get potential clients and drive them to buy your products and click on your links. The biggest problem with Etsy in my opinion is that it shows your potential customers your competitors' products, which can make them hesitate, end up clicking on someone else’s products, and ultimately make you lose a client. When you have an online store, you have total control over what is shown on your website and you can decide what your potential customers are seeing. Why lose clients to your competition when you brought in the traffic?
5 | Look More professional
One of the great things about having your own online store is that you look more professional. On Etsy, you often end up competing and trying to offer the lowest price points to compete with the competition. However, when you have your own online store, you can sell your products for a higher fee; you can sell at the price point that feel right to you.
So what’s the verdict?
